CBD: Definition, How it Works, and its Benefits

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp plants.  Cannabinoids are naturally occurring .  Discovered in 1940, CBD’s reputation for its restorative and amazing healing powers continues to grow exponentially as researchers discover more about its benefits and possible uses.

When people think of marijuana, the first thought often revolves around getting high.  This feeling of euphoria is caused by another cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).  CBD is not involved in this process; therefore, CBD will not make you high and is not addictive.

How CBD Works

The human body contains a system of cellular communication called the endocannabinoid System.  This system works all through the body, touching on every organ.  It sends and receives signals through receptors from all over the body to the brain.  Our bodies make our very own cannabinoid compounds that attach to these receptors.  CBD is also a cannabinoid with the ability to attach to these receptors and travel throughout our bodies.  Consequently, CBD has many therapeutic effects on various organs throughout our body.  As it attaches to the receptors in the endocannabinoid system, it stimulates changes in the body, many of these changes being extremely beneficial with their potential medical uses just being tapped into by researchers.

CBD may help with:

Pain Relief

Many doctors now prescribe medical cannabis or CBD rather than other prescription painkillers, which are often highly addictive and dangerous.  Studies demonstrate that pairing CBD with morphine decreases the possible harmful side effects related to morphine use while contributing to the relief of acute pain.

Weight Loss

Taking CBD stimulates the genes and proteins involved in breaking down fat, increasing the human body’s ability to burn calories.  Our bodies create fat to protect our internal organs from different toxins in our bodies.  CBD helps our bodies release those toxins, decreasing the need for that protective fat layer around the organs.

Lower Blood Pressure

Cannabidiol oil can lower your blood pressure before and after stressful situations.  Possible stress includes mental stress, exercise stress, and temperature or cold stress.

Relieve Anxiety

Again, the research is in its infancy but results to date indicate the CBD has strong anti-anxiety properties.

CBD: Definition, How it Works, and its Benefits

CBD offers a solution for those suffering from panic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, social phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and mild to moderate depression.

CBD and On-Going Research

Control of Epileptic Seizures

To date CBD is recommended for control of seizures for those suffering from LGS and Dravet Syndrome.  Combining CBD with other anti-seizure medications reduces the severity and frequency of seizures.

Fight Cancer

Research is in its infancy regarding CBD and its possible cancer-fighting capabilities.  However, the results show great promise, indicating that CBD is able to slow the progression of breast, prostate, colon and lung cancer.  Cancer cells find it more difficult to grow in an environment inhabited by CBD.

CBD and Autism

To date, there is no research supporting the use of CBD to ease autistic symptoms; however, many parents have turned away from more harmful conventional drugs to CBD to treat their autistic children.  Many symptoms of autism relate directly to the functions of the endocannabinoid system, which is why CBD seems to clearly connect with the disease.  Many autistic children demonstrate a clear improvement when taking CBD, better handling and relating to the world around them.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects a person’s movement resulting in tremors, stiffness, and slowing of movement.  Anecdotal evidence from individuals suffering from Parkinson’s reveals that CBD may reduce the tremors associated with the disease as well as other motor symptoms.

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder resulting in delusions, hallucinations, trouble concentrating, and a lack of motivation.  A preliminary clinical trial indicates that CBD treats schizophrenia as effectively as antipsychotic medications, without the undesired side effects.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disease damaging the myelin sheaths that protect nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.  Symptoms include numbness, speech impairment, poor muscle coordination, and muscle spasticity.  CBD proves to be very effective especially in easing the muscle spasticity in those suffering with MS.

Conclusions Regarding CBD

As cannabis becomes more acceptable throughout society and is now legalized in many areas, its benefits are also coming to the forefront.  The list of possible medical benefits of CBD grows each and every day.  In a society where healthy living becomes increasingly important, a natural alternative to other harmful and often addictive drugs is a welcome addition.  As a naturally occurring , CBD works with our own body systems, enhancing our ability to fight an ever increasing variety of ailments common today, and it does so by boosting the body up, rather than tearing it down.

In short, cannabidiol has the ability to revolutionize the medical industry to the benefit of all of us.
