What is CBD?
Are cannabis, hemp, and marijuana the same?
Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants. In regards to taxonomy, hemp and marijuana are the same plants but different subspecies of cannabis. Hemp is the plant originally used for fiber, oils, and seeds. Marijuana is typically used for its psychoactive properties.
It might be confusing to distinguish between the two as the even look and smell the same. The only significant difference between them is that hemp contains no more than 0.3% (by dry weight) of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). To compare it with marijuana, it contains 5-30%.
What is the difference between THC and CBD?
CBD and THC have a similar makeup: 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and two oxygen atoms. However, they are arranged differently, hence the difference in the way they affect the body.
THC is the compound that accounts for the ‘high’ feeling, and it comes from the sticky, dense buds. These buds are commonly known as weed or pot. CBD is not psychotropic, and it does not affect the user’s mental state. For that reason, it can be used at work when driving or doing different physical activities.
How does CBD work?
CBD affects the body and the brain through the endocannabinoid system. ECS controls sleep, the immune system, memory, emotions, perception of pleasure and pain, and appetite. By activating ECS receptors, CBD affects those functions.

What conditions does CBD treat?
The growing body of scientific evidence suggests that CBD is helpful for anxiety, inflammation, insomnia, chronic pain, and a lot more. In terms of chronic pain management, CBD was shown to reduce inflammatory and neuropathic pain, which is otherwise very hard to treat. Also, studies indicate that CBD can be used as an antiseizure medication.
Officially, the FDA has not yet approved CBD drug products (except for one medication). Therefore, it’s best to consult with a specialist when treating severe conditions or significantly increasing the dosage.
